Hoping for a career boost, journalist Leo has moved from Berlin to Thailand. He has left his daughter behind in Germany. He is hoping for an international breakthrough in connection with reporting on a secret rebel group in the south of the Asian country. However, no contact is made. He spends his free time with his friend Mawar and his family. The latter hopes for a better life in Germany. Leo also longs to return home and offers Mawar his help. He is afraid of losing contact with his daughter.

In order to be able to return to Berlin earlier, Leo writes an article giving the false impression that he has actually been in contact with the rebels. When photographer Julian turns up one day to take photos of the rebel group, Leo is in danger of being exposed. To avoid this, he enters a moral downward spiral.
